DAY 1 - ARRIVAL TIME IN ANTANANARIVO AND DRIVE TO ANDASIBE

Arrival at Ivato International Airport, Antananarivo. The group will be welcomed by HT Agency Tours Staff. Once you have cleared customs formalities, our Guide will smooth through the rest of the arrivals process – currency exchange, setting up the tour leader’s phone with a new local SIM card, and anything else you need.

Andre Pereyras

We take directly a scenic drive to Marozevo where we visit the famous exotic animal breeding centre owned by naturalist Andre Pereyras, where we see almost all the chameleon species of Madagascar – as well as butterflies, leaf tailed geckos, lemurs and other interesting animals. On the national road number 2, to the east, we enjoy panoramic views of the stepped rice fields.

We head to Andasibe

We see various mountains and then continue to the east through the green and luxuriant vegetation, with stops along the scenic rainforest route in world-renowned Andasibe-Perinet National Park, seeing primary forests. After, transfer directly to the hotel.

DAY 2 – ANDASIBE – VISIT AT THE MANTADIA NATIONAL PARK

Breakfast at the hotel and day dedicated to discover the Mantadia National Park, a paradise for nature lovers, with a rich and incredible fauna and flora. This park is known to be home for a wide variety of lemur species, including the legendary Indri Indri, the ysterious Aye Aye, the famous Varecia variegata…

Fauna

About one hundred bird species live also in this middle altitude rainforest, among the Souimanga Sunbird and the brown Mesite. If we are lucky we will find the big Parsoni Chameleon and colored frogs like the golden Mantella. Of course, we can observe the Diademed Sifaka. With its lush and green vegetation, this protected area contains a collection of evergreen vegetation : epiphytic plants, mosses, ferns, bamboos, palm trees, hardwoods, and precious woods… Plan a lunch in the park. In the evening, transfer to the hotel and dinner.

DAY 3 – ANDASIBE – VISIT AT THE MITSINJO COMMUNITY RESERVE

After breakfast, you start with a guided visit at Mitsinjo Community Reserve. Mitsinjo means as much as “looking ahead” or “planning the future”. The reserve is located close to the village Andasibe.

Treasure

Mitsinjo’s biggest treasure is the diversity of frogs. Andasibe is known for its extreme richness in frog species. More than one hundred species can be found in the fascinating fauna in and around the reserve. Almost none occur outside Madagascar, among them common species such as Boophis pyrrhusBoophis luteus, or Boophis viridis, but also rare species such as Mantella crocea.

However

Mistinjo is not only famous for its amphibians: The forest is home to Madagascar’s largest lemur, the IndriDiademed sifakas and wooly lemurs are only a part of the various rare animals that you can watch here. Concerning reptiles, the reserve has a large amount of chameleons Calumma brevicorne, smaller Calumma nasutum, and Calumma emelinae and the bright colored Calumma parsonii cristifer, but also leaf-tailed geckos, snakes such as the Malagasy Tree Boa, and other beauties of nature.

After the visit, we’ll return to the hotel to get rest before starting the guided night walk. Let the magic of the night happen and hear all the countless frogs calling in the dark!

DAY 4 – DRIVE FROM ANDASIBE TO PALMARIUM

Today, after breakfast, we leave early Andasibe to join The Palmarium reserve. This tour will make you discover one of the best of the East part of Madagascar. The trip will take around 04 hours with some stops for photos or breaks, if it is necessary. But, mainly, a short visit at Analamazaotra National Park. Situated next to the village of Andasibe, also known as Périnet, this is one of two protected areas of Andasibe Mantadia Special Reserve, a beautiful high altitude evergreen rainforest.

It’s one of the best places to observe lemurs in the world

It is easy to see at Analamazaotra the Goodman’s mouse lemur, the Crossley’s dwarf lemur, the weasel sportive lemur, the brown lemur, the sifaka, the Aye Aye, and the southern black-and-white ruffed lemur. In this Special Reserve, we can also meet 51 species of reptiles, 84 species of amphibian, 109 species of birds and other avifauna, and a wide variety of butterflu, insects, and micro-mammals. About the flora, 120 orchid species, 100 % endemics, flourish in the reserve. After the visit, we continue driving up to Manambato and then to Akanin’ny Nofy. We need to take boat to get there (From Manambato to Palmarium).We will arrive there toward the end of the afternoon.

DAY 5 – VISIT AT PALMARIUM RESERVE

In the morning, we will start a guided day walk at the Palmarium Reserve. It is a little island where inhabitten species of lemur as Indri, Sifaka, Coronatus, Varécia, variegata, Propithèques… are. There are the best and endemic palm trees of Madagascar, as Dypsis, Ravenea, Orania, Voanioala, and Lemurophoenix. At the end of the afternoon, then start the guided night walk to search for the famous Aye-Aye.

DAY 6 – PALMARIUM TO ANTANANARIVO

After breakfast, shuffle boat to Manambato and back up to Antananarivo. We reach there after 07 hours drive. We will arrive there toward the end of the afternoon, so you will check-in directly at the hotel.

DAY 7 – FLY FROM ANTANANARIVO TO MORONDAVA AND DRIVE TO KIRINDY

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for flight TNR (Departure at 11:00 am) to the west coast of the island, destination to Morondava MOQ (Arrival at 12:00 pm). On your arrival, drive directly to the North, about 42 km following the secondary road which a bit winding, to reach the famous Kirindy Park. Check-in at your hotel (Relais du Kirindy).

Around 6:30 PM

Beginning of the Guided night walks at Kirindy Reserve. Kirindy is the best place in the whole island to observe fossas. Other nocturnal species includes: the rare Coquerel’s giant mouse lemur and pygmy mouse-lemur, fork-crowned lemur, grey mouse lemur, western fat-tailed dwarf lemur and red-tailed sportive lemur. Several bats, tenrecs, mongoose and rodents complete the mammal population.

DAY 8 – DAY VISIT AND DRIVE FROM KIRINDY TO MORONDAVA

After breakfast, around 7:00 AM, beginning of the Guided day visits at Kirindy reserve. Kirindy Reserve is home to seven species of lemur. The most common are the common brown lemurs and the Verreaux’s sifakas. These long-legged, seven-pound lemurs, white with dark patches, leap among tree trunks high in the canopy, propelled by their powerful hind legs but continually maintaining an upright posture.

Kirindy

40 bird, 50 reptile and 15 amphibian species are also found in this magnificent forest. After Kirindy’s Reserve visit, back to the road to Morondava, and we stop at the most scenic road in Madagascar: Baobab Avenue. Stuning, this is the popular attraction all day long. However, sunset is the best and most popular time of the day. Arrival in Morondava at the end of the afternoon, transfer to the hotel.

DAY 9 – MORONDAVA

Breakfast at the hotel and leasure day in Morondava. You can choose whichever tour you want to do in this day, in consultation with your local guide and your driver : visiting the Menabe local, market which represents the authenticity of the area, discover the city life rythmed by fish activities, the culture, the habits, and customs which make this place so particular, or  just enjoy the journey in Morondava : Relax on the beach for the rest of the day, and admire the incredible sight of sunset.

DAY 10 – DRIVE FROM MORONDAVA TO ANTSIRABE

Today, you will have a very long drive, so it is better to leave early Morondava (7:00AM). After breakfast, drive directly to Antsirabe, with enjoying the beautiful landscape of the Menabe area, through the spectacular red hills. Some stops could be done on the road for pictures and breaks if it is necessary. Lunch in Miandrivazo, and then continue to Antsirabe.

Our destination

Is the highland town of Antsirabe, with its wide colonial streets, volcanic lakes and colourful rickshaws. “The Place of Salt” is the centre of beer making in Madagascar and is known for its handicrafts. Founded by Norwegian missionaries in 1856, it is the only place which really feels and looks like a European city – with its elegant spa and the railway station. It has a temperate climate and so fruits and vegetables which grow in cooler parts of the world are grown here. Check-in at the hotel.

DAY 11 – DRIVE FROM ANTSIRABE TO RANOMAFANA

After breakfast, we will do a small city tour by Rickshaws (Visit: the railway station, the Independence Avenue and the famous Hotel des Thermes). We visit a number of the town’s famed craftspeople to watch them working on the precious and semi-precious stones that Antsirabe is famous for. Today we continue to wind our way through the Highlands’ scenic landscapes, where the houses are made with ornately-carved wooden balconies and shutters with bright colours.

Further on we pass the “le col de tapia”, a type of tree resistant to bush fires. The landscape is still dominated by very photogenic rice fields, pine forests, eucalyptus trees and rocky hills. At the Malagasy arts and crafts capital, Ambositra, we stroll through the city with visiting workshops of Zafimaniry artisans – skilled sculptors working on marquetry rosewood and ebony. Arrival in Ranomafana at the end of the afternoon, transfer to the hotel. Then, start a guided night walk.

DAY 12 – RANOMAFANA NP

This morning we search Ranomafana National Park‘s rainforest for lemurs, accompanied by our local naturalist guide.

Fauna

This is a high-altitude rainforest reserve where the Golden Bamboo Lemur was discovered in 1986. The forest is home to 11 other lemur species, endemic chameleons, Leaf-tailed GeckosMantella Frogs and a myriad of birds. We embark on a quest to see the fabled “Hapalemur aureus” – the Golden Bamboo Lemur – which is only found in Ranomafana. We will also see many different species of birds, such as Ground Rollers.

The park

Is particularly rich in flora and features many plant varieties unknown elsewhere, including different types of orchids and ferns. The approximately 40,000 ha of Parc National de Ranomafana, with its rain forest-covered hills and abundant wildlife, has long been considered one of Madagascar’s highlights. Altitudes in the park range from 800 to 1,200 meters above sea level. In addition to its densely-forested hills, Ranomafana’s terrain is characterised by numerous small streams which plummet down to the beautiful Namorona River.

Although

Much of the region has been logged, the park retains relatively large areas of primary forest. This day includes strenuous walks in the rainforest. After 4 hours visit, we will get back to the hotel for lunch, and get rest a little bit before starting the Guided night walk in the area around our hotel to try and spot the Rufous Mouse Lemur, the Greater Dwarf Lemur and some of the other nocturnal wildlife. After the visit, back to the hotel.

DAY 13 –DRIVE FROM RANOMAFANA TO ANTANANARIVO

Early departure to drive viaFianarantsoa, cultural capital of the Central Highland, tothe capital of Madagascar, which isAntananarivo.Crossing the wonderful landscapes, of the Highland along a winding road lined with a mosaic of diverse crop fields and terraced rice paddies as far as the eye can see. Several stops along the way to meet the farmers and some traditional houses along the way. We’ll passing through Ambositraagain. Lunch at Antsirabe. Then, we continue up to Antananarivo. Arrival at the end of the afternoon, and transfer to the hotel.

  • Andasibe – Mantadia National park

Andasibe–Mantadia National Park is about 150 km to the east from Antananarivo, along the RN2, and it can be reached in 3 to 4 hours by car. Comprising two distinct protected areas: Analamazoatra Special Reserve and Mantadia National Park, Andasibe-Mantadia National park is one of the most frequently visited site in the country, and one of the best places to observe lemurs in Madagascar. It is also one of the best primate-watching site in the world.

Fauna

This site is known to be the refuge for a wide variety of lemur species (14 diurnal and nocturnal species), including the famous Indri Indri, the Aye-Aye, the goodman’s mouse lemur, the Crossley’s dwarf lemur, the Eastern woolly lemur sifaka, and sometimes southern black-and-white ruffed lemur. 51 reptile species, 84 amphibian species, 72 mammal species, 117 bird species, and countless insectivorous bats that have been recorded. Mantadia is the one of the best birdwatching site on the Big Island.

Flora

About the flora, with its lush and green vegetation this protected area contains a collection of evergreen vegetation epiphytic plants (plants living on other plants), palm trees, mosses, fern, bamboo, hardwoods, and precious woods, and pandanus. This park is also famous for its orchids with 120 inventoried species, entirely endemic. They bloom between September and January.

  • The Palmarium reserve

The private reserve of Palmarium is also known as “Ankanin’ny Nofy which translates from Malagasy as ‘nest of dreams’. It is spread across 50 hectares of peninsula land in the Lake Ampitabe area on the East coast of Madagascar, nestled on the banks of the Pangalanes channel and the Indian Ocean. Separated from the latter by thin coastal sand dunes, the landscape otherwise comprises of littoral forest with relatively flat terrain and some well-kept trails for exploration.

Fauna

Palmarium represents one of the most beautiful areas along the Pangalanes Canal, where fishermen float by and go about their daily lives. The isolation of the reserve means it is one of the few places in Madagascar where it is possible to come close to some of the least timid, free-ranging and tame lemur species on the island, including the largest lemurs, the Indri, as well as the famous dancing sifaka.

Arboreal Fauna

The area is also home to frogs, reptiles, orchids…A rare and endemic terrestrial and arboreal fauna as well as a magnificent flora (orchids, carnivorous plants, ebony, mahogany, traveller’s trees) … the most beautiful palm trees specific to Madagascar, including the rarest varieties (Dypsis, Ravenea, Orania, but also Voanioala and Lemurophoenix).

  • Baobabs Avenue

About ten trees 30 meters high border this avenue, of the species Adansonia grandidieri, endemic to Madagascar. Baobabs, over 800 years old, known locally as Renala (in Malagasy for “mother of the forest”), are a heirloom of the dense tropical forests that thrived in Madagascar. The trees did not grow in isolation in this dry and bushy landscape but were part of a dense forest which has now disappeared (only 10% of primary forests remain in the country).

Over the years

With the increase in the country’s population, forests have been cut down for agriculture, leaving only baobab trees, which locals preserve both out of respect and for their value as a source of food and materials of constructions.

  • Kirindy Reserve

Kirindy Forest or Kirindy Private Reserve is a vestige of primary dry forest located in the west of Madagascar, around 60 km northeast of the town of Morondava. It covers an area of 72 000 hectares. This site is part of the New Menabe Antimena Protected Area, located between the Tsiribihina River to the north and the Baobab Avenue to the south.

Fauna

Kirindy forest is home to a wide of animal species endemic to Madagascar, such a lemurs, crocodiles, bats, snakes, chameleons. The flagship species to see in Kirindy Forest is the Fossas. Several habituated individuals hand around the ecolodge, which makes for high quality viewing. However, fossas become more active from October onwards. There are also seven lemur species, including the dancing Verreaux’s sifaka and the red-fronted brown lemur.

Night walk

Tend to be very productive and offer chances to see the Malagasy giant jumping rat, the red-tailed sportive lemur, the grey mouse lemur, the pale fork-marked lemur, and the Madame Berthe’s mouse lemur. In addition to its wildlife, Kirindy Forest is also home to a luxuriant flora. Its tall trees are covered with mosses an epiphytes, creating a unique ecosystem.

  • Antsirabe

Antsirabe – whose name means “Where there is much salt”, in reference to its mineral rich waters – is known for its water, renowned throughout the world for it’s therapeutic properties. It is also famous for its textiles, tobacco, and agricultural production. This town is one of a very pretty and very clean town and one of its most prosperous. Its broad large avenues are shaded and bordered by jacaranda trees.

How beautiful it is?

During the flowering season, these colorful plants make the town even more charming with all the jacaranda trees purple flowers layers associated with rickshaws, dominated especially by the sharp orange color, gives a very particular stereotype and an exceptional key. Here, the air is very pure. The mountainous region of Antsirabe offers many hiking and trekking routes.

Lake

The volcanic lakes of the region are also a major tourist attraction, containing many ancestral legends and mysteries, two most known lakes which make the wonders of Antsirabe are Andraikiba and the extraordinary and mysterious Tritriva lake.

  • Ranomafana National Park

The Ranomafana National Park is located in the southeast of Madagascar straddling the regions of Upper Matsiatra and Vatovavy Fitovinany. It is 412 km south-east of Antananarivo, 65 km north-east of Fianarantsoa and 139 km west of the town of Mananjary.

World Heritage Site

Terrestrial National Park classified World Heritage Site with its dense low-lying humid forest (600-800m), its dense humid forest of medium altitude (800-1400m), its bamboo forest, its marshland where plant and animal species such as Pandanus, Vareciavariegata variegate, Crayfish, Limnogale Mergulus choose as habitat.

Fauna

6 species of fish, 74 species of insects, 90 species of butterfly including 4 rare species, 350 species of spiders, 6 endemic species of crustaceans and a subspecies of crayfish of the group of Astacoides. 58 species of reptiles, 98 species of amphibians, 115 of the 257 species of birds of Madagascar the majority of which is endemic. 12 species of lemurs, 7 species of carnivorous mammals and 20 species of insectivores, 07 species of bats including Myzopodaaurita, a monogenous that exists only in Madagascar. There are also 13 species of rodents.

Flora

The Ranomafana forest is of the rainforest type whose hard core considered as primary forest is distant from the road axis. There are Apocynaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Rubiaceae, Dypsis sp and Phloga sp of the family Palmae, Aspleniumnidus, orchids of the genera Bulbophyllum and Eulophiella. Large areas of secondary forest are occupied by Psydiumcattle yanum of the family Myrtaceae.

Tropical hardwoods

Such as rosewood or Dalbergia sp, maka or Weinmania sp and varongy or Mespilodaphne tapack, are also visible. A profusion of rare plants is also identified: ferns, bamboos and hundreds of orchids. Chinese guava occupies more and more spaces and is dispersed by lemurs and frugivorous birds.

  • Climate

The climate is tropical, but cooler in the highlands (dropping as low as 5°C at night in July/August in Antananarivo and Andasibe). The dry season is March to October continuing into November in most areas. The east coast is best March-May and September-November, January-March is cyclone season.

The south west area is hot, dry and semi-arid. March-April is the best time for flowers and reptiles. November (spring) is generally the best time for wildlife and birds, but lemurs can be viewed all year round. Seasonal weather patterns can be unpredictable.

  • Equipment

HT Agency Tours offers torches for nocturnal wildlife walks, a water bottle. Please bring camera film (and spare batteries), binoculars and a beach towel and swimwear. Rain proof pants are very handy for walks in the rainforest. Walking poles maybe useful in Ranomafana NP and Andasibe NP.

What to wear?

Lightweight walking bootshoes and trainers is recommended. Clothing should be lightweight, but a warm sweater or jacket is advisable as nights at altitude and under desert conditions can be very cold, even in summer and especially in July to September. Rainwear is highly recommended on all tours for the occasional shower. Warmer layers will be required during the winter months.

  • Visa and Passport

Madagascar: An entry visa is required by USA citizens and can be obtained on arrival. The visa is chargeable at 40USD and issued for 30 days. The visa fee is payable in USD or Euro and we advise to take small denominations and a little extra as the USD amount is calculated daily by the applicable rate of exchange. You will need to print a copy of your evisa approval letter and present this with your passport at immigration upon your arrival. The approval letter will take a minimum of 3 days to be processed so we strongly advise for you to apply within plenty of time (maximum of 6 months prior to your arrival) before your departure. You will be permitted to stay within Madagascar for a maximum of up to 90 days and we strongly recommend for you to read the FAQ section on the e-visa website before applying.

  • Insurance

It is a condition of booking with HT Agency Tours that you have adequate valid travel insurance. It is your responsibility to arrange appropriate travel insurance and ensure you have read and understood the full terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy to ensure that you are covered for all activities you intend to undertake whilst on the tour, including all optional activities.

Policy

Your Insurance Policy must fully cover you for medical expenses and emergency repatriation to your home country. Please ensure your policy includes medical emergency helicopter evacuation in the event of illness or injury and covers the entire duration of your holiday. If you are trekking at altitude, please ensure that there is no upper altitude limit which may limit or exclude cover for your trip.

  • Vaccinations

Nothing compulsory, but we recommend protection against malaria, tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A plus, Polio and diptheria. Please note that all travellers aged over 9 months old that have travelled from or have transit via a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, will need to present a Yellow Fever certificate at immigration/borders in Madagascar for inspection. Consult your travel clinic for latest advice on different prophylaxis available against malaria.

We recommend

Following the advice given by the Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, we strongly recommend the wearing long sleeved shirts and the liberal application of insect repellent as a precautionary measure to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. These precautions should be taken at all times as the mosquitoes are also active during daylight hours. Please check the latest requirements with your travel clinic or doctor prior to departure.

  • Food and drink

The costs of meals may vary according to the location, type of restaurant and number of courses eaten and so the prices given below are just an average guide. Local restaurants located off the beaten track may be less expensive, whereas an upmarket restaurant located in the center of a major city may charge more:

  • Lunch price: 10 USD
  • Dinner price: 17 USD
  • Beer price: 2 USD
  • Watter price: 1 USD

 

For safe operation

  • Given the fluid nature of local COVID-19 protocols, our itineraries are regularly reviewed and will be modified based on local requirements to ensure a safe experience. If a major change is necessary, we will let you know before departure.
  • Our guide will use their judgment during the trip to modify the itinerary if physical distancing cannot be achieved
  • Our guide will receive in-depth training on COVID-19 protocols and how to conduct our journeys in the “new normal”.
  • Our guide will brief you upon arrival on the use of face masks and physical distancing during the trip, based on local government guidelines.
  • Only restaurants with strict protocols that comply with local food hygiene and physical distancing requirements will be used. We will encourage outdoor dining areas where possible.
  • All of our staff and third party suppliers will be continually informed of new health and safety protocols.

 

Transportation Protocols

  • Our drivers will follow local protocols on the use of face masks and physical distancing required.
  • Our drivers will provide alcohol-based hand sanitizer and tissues in the vehicle and encourage customers to wash their hands when getting into the vehicle.
  • All vehicles will be disinfected (seats, door handles, etc.) regularly throughout the day.

 

Protocols for Hotels

  • We will only offer hotels that have specific COVID-19 protocols in place and comply with local government guidelines.
  • We will ensure that these measures include; improved room cleaning, ventilation, physical distancing, regular cleaning and disinfection of high frequency touch points in public areas, food safety, staff retraining and minimization of contact within properties

 

If You Get Sick

  • All of our leaders are trained to help any guest who becomes ill while traveling.
  • We also have an “action plan” in case of suspected COVID-19 cases within the group and are ready to seek medical support at any time.
  • Our guides are supported by our 24/7 based operations team and local partners across the country

  • We recommend you to bring your own face masks (at least 2 reusable) and an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
