DAY 1: ANTANANARIVO - ANDASIBE

Arrival and Welcome Experience for Small Group Tours

Smooth Arrival at Ivato International Airport

Upon arrival at Ivato International Airport, the group will be warmly welcomed by the HT Agency Tours staff. As soon as you clear customs, our guide will assist you with the entire process. Moreover, they will help with currency exchange, set up the tour leader’s phone with a new local SIM card, and ensure that all basic needs are met before departure.
Thanks to this personalized support, your small group tours experience begins in a comfortable and stress-free way.

Departure Along the Scenic Eastern Route

Once the arrival formalities are completed, the journey continues along National Road Number 2 toward the east. Along the way, you will enjoy panoramic views of beautifully stepped rice fields. Additionally, you will see a variety of mountains and highland landscapes that create a stunning introduction to Madagascar’s natural beauty.

Entering the Eastern Rainforest Region

As you travel further east, the scenery shifts into green and luxuriant vegetation. Because this route crosses one of Madagascar’s most admired ecological regions, several short stops are planned. These moments allow the group to appreciate the surrounding rainforest and take pictures of the impressive viewpoints.

First Encounter With Andasibe–Perinet National Park

Eventually, the road leads you through the scenic forest corridors surrounding the world-renowned Andasibe–Perinet National Park. This protected area is known for its primary forests, rich biodiversity, and the unforgettable call of the indri lemur.
Upon arrival in Andasibe, the group will proceed to the hotel for check-in and a well-deserved rest. This marks the beginning of your immersive adventure as part of our expertly guided small group tours.

DAY 2: ANDASIBE - ANTANANARIVO

Early Morning Guided Visit to Analamazaotra National Park

After breakfast, your day begins with a guided visit to the famous Analamazaotra National Park. Because wildlife activity is highest in the early hours, it is strongly recommended to leave the hotel around 7:30 AM. This early start significantly increases your chances of encountering the Indri Indri and the Diademed Sifaka in their natural forest habitat.

The guided walk lasts approximately three hours, allowing enough time to explore the trails and learn about the incredible biodiversity of the region. Additionally, within a mile of the park, you can hear the unique and powerful call of the indri from early morning until midday, and sometimes again in the late afternoon.

Meeting the Iconic Indri Indri

The Indri, known as Babakoto in Malagasy, is the largest living lemur, reaching nearly one meter in height. Andasibe is considered the best place in Madagascar to observe this species, mainly because several families are habituated to humans. Although they live in small groups, they cannot survive in captivity, which makes seeing them in the wild an extraordinary privilege.

Moreover, the Indri is deeply respected across Madagascar, and there are several legends explaining its origin and symbolic meaning. Your guide will share these fascinating stories during the visit.

Discovering Other Lemur Species in the Forest

Aside from the Indri, Analamazaotra is home to 13 additional lemur species, making it one of the richest primate habitats in the country. You may encounter:

  • Woolly lemur

  • Grey bamboo lemur

  • Diademed sifaka

  • Common brown lemur

  • Red mouse lemur

  • Red-bellied lemur

  • Black-and-white ruffed lemur

  • Aye-aye (rare and elusive)

Because your guide is highly trained, you will learn to recognize each species by its behavior, calls, and preferred habitat.

Afternoon Visit to Lemurs’ Island and Vakona Reserve

In the afternoon, your small group tours experience continues with an unforgettable close-up encounter at Lemurs’ Island. Here, habituated lemurs may approach you, offering fantastic opportunities for observation and photography. This visit is always a highlight for travelers, as it provides a warm and interactive moment with these playful animals.

Afterward, you will continue to the Vakona Reserve, where you can observe additional wildlife. The small zoo features:

  • Crocodiles in river enclosures

  • Native bird species

  • Turtles and small reptiles

  • Other endemic animals in well-maintained habitats

This combination of activities offers a complete perspective on Madagascar’s remarkable fauna.

Stop at the Pereyras Reserve

Before reaching Mandraka, a short stop is planned at the Pereyras Reserve, founded by naturalist André Pereyras. Even though the name of the center contains the word, the text below avoids using it, as requested.

The reserve is an important breeding and conservation facility where visitors can observe:

  • Almost all chameleon species found in Madagascar

  • Leaf-tailed geckos

  • Butterflies

  • Frogs

  • Small mammals

  • A few lemurs

Because the animals are kept in structured environments, this visit allows you to study species that are difficult to spot in the wild.

Return to Antananarivo

After the visit, the journey continues back to Antananarivo. The drive climbs gradually toward the Central Highlands, offering pleasant views and a relaxing end to an enriching day full of discoveries. This return marks the completion of a full wildlife-focused day perfectly suited for small group tours seeking both learning and adventure.

DAY 3: ANTANANARIVO - MORONDAVA

West Coast Discovery: Morondava & Avenue of the Baobabs

Morning Transfer and Domestic Flight to Morondava

Today, you will transfer to the airport for your scheduled domestic flight from Antananarivo (TNR) departing at 11:20 AM toward the west coast. The short flight takes you directly to Morondava (MOQ), with an estimated arrival at 12:25 PM.
Once you land, the group will be welcomed by your local team, and you will transfer straight to your hotel for check-in. This smooth transition ensures that your small group tours experience continues comfortably and efficiently.

Relaxation Time Before the Afternoon Excursion

After settling in, you will have time to relax and enjoy the lush beach views surrounding your hotel. This peaceful break is ideal for recovering from the flight, taking photographs, or simply enjoying the sea breeze.
Later in the afternoon, around 4:00 PM, your guide will escort the group to one of Madagascar’s most iconic natural landmarks.

Guided Visit to the Famous Avenue of the Baobabs

Your afternoon is dedicated to discovering the spectacular Avenue of the Baobabs, one of the most photographed landscapes in Madagascar. About ten towering baobab trees, each rising nearly 30 meters, line this majestic dirt road. All belong to the species Adansonia grandidieri, which is endemic to Madagascar.

Moreover, many of these baobabs are estimated to be over 800 years old. Locally called renala, meaning “mother of the forest,” they are deeply respected throughout the region. Their impressive presence stands as a reminder of the once-dense tropical forests that once covered western Madagascar.

Understanding the History and Ecology of Baobabs

Contrary to what the current landscape suggests, baobabs did not originally grow alone. Instead, they were part of an extensive forest ecosystem that has since disappeared. Today, only 10% of Madagascar’s primary forests remain.
Because of population growth and agricultural expansion, large areas of forest were cleared over the centuries. However, baobabs survived thanks to their cultural importance and their practical value. Local communities continue to protect them, as the trees provide food resources and construction materials.

Your guide will explain the ecological significance of baobabs, their life cycle, and the conservation challenges they face. Additionally, the late-afternoon visit offers the perfect lighting for photography, especially during sunset.

Return to the Hotel

After your visit to the Avenue of the Baobabs, you will return to your hotel. This relaxing evening allows you to unwind, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next stage of your adventure. The day blends exploration, learning, and breathtaking scenery—making it a memorable highlight of your small group tours program.

DAY 4: MORONDAVA – KIRINDY – MORONDAVA – ISALO

Kirindy Wildlife Expedition and Scenic Flight to Isalo

Early Morning Drive to Kirindy Reserve

After breakfast, your day begins with an early departure around 7:00 AM. The group will drive north for approximately 42 km along a secondary road that is slightly winding. Because of these road conditions, the journey takes about two hours before reaching the renowned Kirindy Park, a key highlight for wildlife enthusiasts joining small group tours in Madagascar.

Guided Visit at Kirindy: Lemurs, Birds, and Unique Wildlife

Upon arrival, you will start a guided daytime visit through the Kirindy Reserve. This dry deciduous forest is famous for its rich biodiversity and is home to seven species of lemurs. The most commonly observed are:

  • Common brown lemurs

  • Verreaux’s sifakas

These sifakas are particularly impressive. White with contrasting dark patches, they glide between tree trunks with extraordinary agility. As they leap through the canopy, their powerful hind legs allow them to maintain an upright posture, creating one of the most memorable wildlife sightings of the region.

Furthermore, Kirindy hosts an exceptional variety of fauna, including:

  • 40 bird species

  • 50 reptile species

  • 15 amphibian species

Your guide will help you spot and identify these species while explaining the ecological importance of this remarkable forest.

Return to Morondava and Airport Transfer

After completing your guided visit, you will return to Morondava. The drive offers another opportunity to appreciate the west coast landscape before proceeding to the airport. Because today’s schedule is well organized, you will seamlessly transition to the next step of your journey.

Private Charter Flight to Isalo National Park

From Morondava Airport, you will board your private charter flight heading toward Isalo. The flight takes approximately 39 minutes, offering stunning aerial views of Madagascar’s diverse terrain. This quick transfer is an excellent advantage for small group tours, allowing more time for exploration and less time spent on long road trips.

Arrival in Isalo and Sunset at the Window of Isalo

Upon landing in Isalo, you will drive to your hotel with one special stop along the way: the famous Window of Isalo. This natural sandstone formation creates a spectacular frame through which the sun sets, offering one of the most breathtaking views in southern Madagascar.

As the colors shift across the sky, this peaceful moment becomes a perfect opportunity for photography, reflection, and group enjoyment. It is often considered one of the most iconic sunsets of the entire journey.

LOCATION: ISALO
ACCOMMODATION: ISALO ROCK LODGE
OPTION: BREAKFAST AND DINNER
DRIVE : 2H DRIVE IN BUMPY ROAD (Round  trip) +  1H15M FLIGHT

DAY 5: ISALO

Full-Day Exploration of Isalo National Park

Morning Start: Entering the Iconic Isalo Landscapes

After breakfast, your adventure continues with a full-day exploration of the breathtaking landscapes of Isalo National Park. As you enter the park, you will immediately notice its striking contrast of desert plains, deep canyons, sandstone cliffs, open grasslands, and palm-lined natural pools. Because Isalo is one of Madagascar’s most geologically dramatic parks, it is a must-see highlight for travelers joining small group tours.

Observing Lemurs in Their Natural Habitat

As you walk along the scenic trails, you may encounter the three lemur species that inhabit this region:

  • Red-fronted brown lemurs

  • Ring-tailed lemurs

  • Verreaux’s sifakas

These species offer a variety of fascinating behaviors. For example, Verreaux’s sifakas are known for their distinctive upright leaps and graceful movements. Additionally, the park’s unique terrain gives you excellent opportunities to observe them in a natural and peaceful environment.

Discovering Rare and Endemic Vegetation

Isalo is equally impressive for its flora. Throughout the hike, your guide will point out several endemic plants, including:

  • Uapaca bojeri, a resilient tree adapted to dry climates

  • Pachypodium rosulatum, also called “elephant’s foot” because of its distinctive trunk

  • Aloe isaloensis, a rare aloe species found only in Isalo

These plants contribute to the park’s remarkable ecological diversity and are essential to understanding its unique environment.

Cultural Significance of the Park’s Rock Formations

Beyond its natural beauty, Isalo also holds important cultural heritage. For centuries, the eroded sandstone mountains served as temporary resting places for the Bara people, who placed their deceased in natural rock shelters before transferring them to their final tombs. Your guide will explain these traditions with care and respect, adding cultural depth to your experience.

Strenuous Walks and Scenic Picnic Lunch

Because of the rugged terrain, today’s activities include strenuous walks, and good footwear is essential. Nevertheless, the reward is well worth the effort. Along the way, you will enjoy panoramic views, natural pools, and shaded resting spots.
A picnic lunch in the park is included, allowing you to relax in a beautiful setting before continuing your afternoon exploration.

LOCATION: ISALO
ACCOMMODATION: ISALO ROCK LOGDE

OPTION: BREAKFAST AND DINNER

DAY 6: ISALO - RANOMAFANA

Scenic Overland Journey from Isalo to Ranomafana

Early Departure From Isalo

Today involves a long but fascinating overland journey. Therefore, it is best to leave Isalo at 7:00 AM. After breakfast, the group will begin the drive toward Ranomafana National Park, one of Madagascar’s most beautiful rainforest regions. This full-day transfer is an essential part of many small group tours, as it showcases the powerful contrasts between the island’s southern and central landscapes.

Crossing the Horombe Plateau and the “Porte du Sud”

As the journey begins, you will pass through the legendary “Porte du Sud,” a symbolic gateway marking the transition into the southern region. You will then cross the vast Horombe Plateau, known for its deep red soil and wide, desolate plains.
Along the way, you can admire striking rock formations shaped by centuries of wind and erosion. Some of these formations hold cultural importance and are considered sacred by local communities.

Driving Toward the Andringitra Massif

Further along the route, the road approaches the spectacular Andringitra Massif. These volcanic peaks act as a natural transition between Madagascar’s contrasting landscapes. On one side lies the lush Central Highlands, with granite formations rising dramatically from the earth. On the other side, the scenery gradually shifts toward the dry southern region.
Because of this variety, the drive offers excellent photographic opportunities and a deeper understanding of Madagascar’s geological diversity.

Passing Through Ihosy, Heart of the South-Central Region

Your journey continues to Ihosy, a lively town that serves as the regional capital. The surrounding communities are historically known for cattle herding, especially the iconic zebu, which plays an important role in local culture. Although today is primarily a travel day, passing through Ihosy helps illustrate the diversity of lifestyles across Madagascar.

Visit to Anja Community Reserve

After Ihosy, you will continue toward the Anja Community Reserve for a short but rewarding walk. This site is famous for its thriving population of ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta).
Because visitors used to feed the lemurs in the past, many individuals are remarkably unafraid of humans. As a result, they often come close enough for exceptional photographs, making this stop a favorite among travelers on small group tours.

Cultural Encounters: Local Winery and Antemoro Paper Workshop

Before reaching your final destination, the journey includes two enriching stops:

  • Local Winery: Here, you can learn about regional wine production and taste unique varieties crafted in the highlands.

  • Antemoro Paper Workshop: This traditional paper is handmade from the bark of specific local trees. The technique, inherited from early Arab influences, has been preserved for generations. The workshop visit offers insight into one of Madagascar’s most distinctive handicrafts.

These stops provide valuable cultural context and support local communities through responsible tourism.

Arrival and Check-In at the Hotel

In the late afternoon, you will finally arrive in Ranomafana. After this full day of exploration and scenic travel, you will check in at your hotel and enjoy a well-deserved rest.
This day, although long, is rich in landscapes, culture, and wildlife, making it an unforgettable chapter of the journey.

DAY 7: RANOMAFANA

Full-Day Wildlife Discovery in Ranomafana National Park

Morning Exploration of the High-Altitude Rainforest

This morning, you will begin an exciting search for wildlife inside the lush Ranomafana National Park, accompanied by an experienced local naturalist guide. Because this is a high-altitude rainforest, it offers unique ecological conditions where rare species have been discovered. Notably, this is where the Golden Bamboo Lemur was first identified in 1986, making it one of the most significant conservation sites in Madagascar.

As you enter the forest, you will walk through dense vegetation alive with movement, sound, and rich biodiversity—an experience that travelers on small group tours deeply appreciate.

Observing Rare Lemurs and Unique Reptiles

Ranomafana is home to 12 lemur species, including the famous Golden Bamboo Lemur. Today, you will embark on a quest to find the elusive Hapalemur aureus, as it is found only in this park. Additionally, you may encounter:

  • Endemic chameleons

  • Leaf-tailed geckos

  • Mantella frogs

  • A variety of small mammals

These species thrive in the humid forest, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.

Birdwatching in a Biodiversity Hotspot

Beyond lemurs, Ranomafana is also known for its remarkable birdlife. The park shelters Ground Rollers, vangas, sunbirds, and many other forest birds that are best spotted in the morning. Because the forest canopy varies in height, birdwatching here is both rewarding and visually spectacular.

Discovering Rare Flora and Forest Landscapes

The park’s flora is just as extraordinary as its fauna. Ranomafana contains numerous plant species found nowhere else, including:

  • Several types of orchids

  • Unique fern varieties

  • Rare understory plants

Moreover, the terrain is made up of rainforest-covered hills stretching across 40,000 hectares. This vast landscape has long been considered one of Madagascar’s greatest natural highlights. With altitudes ranging from 800 to 1,200 meters, the environment changes subtly as you move deeper into the park.

Streams, Waterfalls, and the Namorona River

Throughout the hike, you will notice countless small streams flowing down steep slopes toward the striking Namorona River. These waterways add to the park’s beauty and create ideal habitats for amphibians and aquatic insects. Although parts of the region have been logged, Ranomafana still preserves large and impressive sections of primary forest.

Because of the terrain, today includes strenuous rainforest walks, so good shoes and hydration are essential.

Return to the Hotel and Afternoon Break

After approximately four hours of exploration, you will return to the hotel for lunch. This well-deserved break allows you to rest and prepare for the next activity. Since the forest is active both day and night, the afternoon serves as a transition to another exciting part of your journey.

Guided Night Walk for Nocturnal Wildlife

In the early evening, you will begin a guided night walk in the area surrounding your hotel. Nighttime is when many forest species become active, giving you the chance to spot:

  • Rufous mouse lemurs

  • Greater dwarf lemurs

  • Nocturnal chameleons

  • Frogs and geckos

  • Various insects and small mammals

Because the rainforest transforms after sunset, this experience often becomes a favorite moment for travelers seeking a deeper connection to Madagascar’s biodiversity.

End of Day and Return to the Hotel

After the night walk, you will return to your hotel for dinner and rest. This full day—combining rainforest hikes, wildlife searches, and nocturnal exploration—offers one of the most immersive experiences available on small group tours in Madagascar.

LOCATION: RANOMAFANA
ACCOMMODATION: THERMAL
OPTION: BREAKFAST AND DINNER

DAY 8: RANOMAFANA – ANTSIRABE

Scenic Journey to Antsirabe Through Madagascar’s Highlands

Departure Toward the Northern Highlands

After breakfast, the journey continues as you head north in the direction of Antsirabe. As you leave Ranomafana behind, the scenery gradually opens into a series of captivating landscapes. Because this part of Madagascar is known for its beauty, today’s drive is especially visual and enjoyable for travelers joining small group tours.

Highland Landscapes and Traditional Agriculture

Along the way, the landscape is dominated by photogenic rice fields, rolling hills, and patches of pine and eucalyptus forests. These elements create a mosaic of colors and textures, making this drive one of the most picturesque sections of the route. Furthermore, the Highlands region is rich in agricultural traditions, which you will observe throughout the journey.

Stop in Ambositra: Center of Malagasy Art and Craftsmanship

Your first major stop is in Ambositra, widely recognized as the capital of Malagasy arts and crafts. Here, you will stroll through the town and visit workshops belonging to Zafimaniry artisans, renowned for their mastery in carving rosewood and ebony. Their marquetry work is exceptionally detailed and reflects centuries of inherited techniques.
These visits offer meaningful cultural insight and provide excellent opportunities to support local craftsmanship.

Crossing the “Col de Tapia”

As the drive continues, you will pass through the Col de Tapia, a unique forest where tapia trees grow naturally. These trees are remarkably resistant to bushfires, making them an important ecological feature of the region. Additionally, the tapia forest supports wild silkworms, contributing to local silk production traditions.

Exploring the Traditional Highlands Architecture

Further along the road, the journey winds through scenic Highlands landscapes. The houses in this region are particularly striking, adorned with:

  • Ornately carved wooden balconies

  • Decorative shutters

  • Brightly painted facades

This distinctive architecture showcases the artistic identity of the central Highlands and adds vibrant charm to the surroundings.

Visit to Antsirabe’s Stone Workshops

Before reaching your hotel, you will stop to visit several of Antsirabe’s famous craftspeople. The city is well known for its work with precious and semi-precious stones, such as quartz, tourmaline, and garnet. Watching artisans polish and shape the stones gives you an inside look at one of the region’s most respected trades.

Arrival and Transfer to the Hotel

By late afternoon, you will arrive in Antsirabe, a peaceful high-altitude town known for its cool climate and elegant colonial architecture. You will then transfer to your hotel for check-in and a relaxing evening.
This day, although filled with travel, offers a rich combination of landscapes, culture, and traditional artistry—making it another memorable chapter of your small group tours experience.

DAY 9: ANTSIRABE - ANTANANARIVO

Return to Antananarivo Through the Central Highlands

Morning Departure Toward the Capital

After breakfast, you will begin your drive directly toward Antananarivo. This final stretch of your journey takes you through some of the most scenic landscapes of Madagascar’s Central Highlands. Because this region is home to the Merina communities, the road offers rich cultural insight into their daily life, agriculture, and traditions. Their influence remains strong today, as they historically formed the ruling class of the island.
This route is both relaxing and visually captivating, making it a pleasant conclusion to many small group tours across Madagascar.

Crossing the Merina Highlands and Observing Local Life

As the drive continues, you will pass countless rice terraces, red-earth villages, and traditional Malagasy houses perched on rolling hills. These landscapes are especially charming and provide a genuine look at rural day-to-day activities. Additionally, you may see farmers tending their fields, families walking to village markets, and artisans transporting handmade goods—simple yet meaningful scenes that reflect the country’s cultural richness.

Stop in Ambatolampy: Meeting the Aluminum Craftsmen

A short stop is planned in Ambatolampy, a town famous for its metal-working ateliers. Here, you will visit local manufacturers who forge aluminum pots and decorative items using traditional casting techniques.
This craft is a vital industry for the region, as these workshops produce the pots and pans used daily in Malagasy households. Over the years, artisans have also expanded their creations to include polished decorative pieces, showcasing both skill and creativity. The visit provides an excellent opportunity to observe authentic craftsmanship and support local artisans.

Lunch in Behenjy, Town of Foie Gras

After leaving Ambatolampy, the drive continues north toward Behenjy, a town renowned throughout Madagascar for its delicious foie gras. Because Behenjy is located along the main national road, it makes an ideal lunch stop. You will enjoy a relaxing meal before continuing the final part of your journey to Antananarivo.

Arrival in Antananarivo

You will arrive in Antananarivo in the afternoon. The descent into the capital offers panoramic views of the city’s hills, markets, and colorful neighborhoods. After several days of exploration, this return marks the closing chapter of your experience, blending culture, landscapes, gastronomy, and memorable encounters—an ideal completion to your small group tours adventure.

Because this flight provides spectacular aerial views of the coastline and northern peaks, it is a memorable start to this new chapter of your small group tours adventure.

Arrival in Antsiranana and Scenic Coastal Exploration

Upon arrival in Antsiranana, you will begin your visit to the iconic Three Bays, one of the region’s most spectacular natural attractions. These bays—famous for their turquoise water, white-sand beaches, and dramatic coastal scenery—are connected by a sandy road and a well-marked coastal path.

DAY 11: DIEGO - ANKARANA

Full-Day Exploration of Ankarana National Park

Morning Departure Toward Ankarana

After breakfast, you will continue your journey north to begin the visit of Ankarana National Park, one of Madagascar’s most remarkable protected areas. The drive offers changing scenery as you approach a rugged mountain range that marks the entrance to this extraordinary reserve.
Because Ankarana combines wildlife, geology, and culture, it is a highlight for travelers joining small group tours in northern Madagascar.

Discovering the Unique Features of Ankarana Special Reserve

The Ankarana Special Reserve is an essential part of Madagascar’s national network of protected areas. Its international importance comes from its unique combination of:

  • Exceptional biodiversity

  • Dramatic geological formations

  • Sacred cultural sites

This makes Ankarana an unforgettable destination for anyone interested in both nature and heritage.

Geological Wonders: Karst Formations and Caves

One of the park’s most striking features is its karst landscape, shaped by millions of years of erosion. These formations include sharp limestone pinnacles, deep sinkholes, caves, and underground rivers. As you explore the area, your guide will explain how water sculpted these structures, creating an impressive natural labyrinth.
Because these landscapes are rare and scientifically important, they attract geologists, photographers, and adventurous hikers from around the world.

Cultural Heritage: Sacred Lake and Traditional Tombs

Beyond its natural beauty, Ankarana also holds deep cultural significance. The park is home to several sacred sites, including:

  • A sacred lake, linked to spiritual traditions

  • A series of Antakarana tombs hidden within caves

Your guide will share the stories and customs connected to these places, offering insight into the cultural identity of the Antakarana communities who have lived here for generations.

Because the terrain varies from dry forest to limestone plateau, each section of the park offers new ecological surprises.

Overview of Key Destinations Included in This Tour

Andasibe National Park

Andasibe National Park, located in the Toamasina region, sits just 1.5 km from Andasibe village, 140 km east of Antananarivo, and 200 km from Tamatave. Covering 16,310 hectares, the area includes both the Analamazaotra Special Reserve (810 ha) and Mantadia National Park (15,500 ha).

The climate is very humid, with an average temperature of 18°C and approximately 1,700 mm of rainfall per year. Around 80% of the park consists of primary forest, while 13% is secondary forest impacted by past human activity.

The Analamazaotra Reserve is especially known for protecting the Indri, the largest lemur species in Madagascar. Visitors can also explore an orchid park, and the park provides a choice of three campsites and a hotel for overnight stays.

For travelers passionate about wildlife and nature, Andasibe is one of Madagascar’s must-visit destinations, offering exceptional biodiversity and atmospheric rainforest trails.

Isalo National Park

Located in the south, near Ranohira, Isalo National Park spans an impressive 81,540 hectares. The surrounding population is mostly composed of the Bara communities, alongside others who settled in the region due to sapphire mining near Ilakaka.

Isalo is also a site of major archaeological and geological importance, as it preserves evidence of Madagascar’s former connection to the African continent millions of years ago. The park is world-famous for its dramatic sandstone formations, sculpted over 200 million years since the Jurassic period. This north-south range stretches nearly 100 km, forming deep canyons, towering peaks up to 200 meters high, and massive rock blocks that create a landscape unlike anywhere else.

The park shelters incredible biodiversity, including:

  • 82 bird species

  • 33 reptiles

  • 15 amphibians

  • 14 mammals, including seven lemur species such as the maki, sifaka, and varika

Isalo’s hiking routes, natural pools, waterfalls, and stunning rock formations make it one of the most visited and photographed sites in Madagascar.

Kirindy National Park

Kirindy National Park is located in the Menabe region, about 70 km south of Morondava, along the Mozambique Channel. It forms part of the Sakalava cultural region and is recognized as one of the new UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, joining a global network of 669 reserves across 120 countries.

Kirindy is a terrestrial national park, a RAMSAR Site, and a biosphere reserve. Its biodiversity represents a transition zone between the ecosystems of western and southern Madagascar, featuring:

  • 70% dense dry forest

  • Thorny thickets dominated by Didiereaceae and Euphorbiaceae

  • Brackish coastal lakes

  • Habitat for numerous species of birds, reptiles, and lemurs

The biodiversity endemicity in Kirindy is remarkable—97% of species are endemic—making it one of the most biologically important dry forests in the world.

Avenue of the Baobabs

The legendary Avenue of the Baobabs is lined with a dozen majestic baobab trees, reaching up to 30 meters high. All belong to the species Adansonia grandidieri, which is endemic to Madagascar.

Many of these baobabs are estimated to be over 800 years old. Locally called renala, meaning “mother of the forest,” they are remnants of ancient tropical forests that once covered the region. Although the surrounding landscape is now dry and sparse, these giant trees originally grew as part of a dense forest system, of which only 10% of primary vegetation remains today.

Due to agricultural expansion over the centuries, much of the forest was cleared, leaving only the baobabs standing. Local communities have preserved them out of respect and for their value as sources of food and construction materials. Their iconic silhouette has made the Avenue one of Madagascar’s most famous natural landmarks.

Ankarana National Park

Ankarana National Park, located in the DIANA region near Ambilobe, is a renowned natural and cultural treasure. Historically, the Antakarana communities used the area as a refuge, and one of the caves within the park served as a tomb for Antakarana kings.

The park hosts at least 330 species, belonging to 77 plant families. Most trees are deciduous, and many bloom between September and November. The landscape is dominated by a spectacular expanse of tsingy, a dramatic limestone formation shaped by erosion, rising from a dense deciduous forest.

Ankarana extends across four rural municipalities:

  • Marivorahona

  • Antsaravibe

  • Anivorano Nord

  • Ambondrona

Its network of caves, canyons, underground rivers, and tsingy formations make Ankarana one of Madagascar’s most geologically spectacular parks.

Constance Tsarabanjina (Mitsio Archipelago)

Tsarabanjina, one of the idyllic islets in the Mitsio Archipelago, is considered a sacred place by the local populations. Visitors from nearby islands often travel here to leave offerings such as honey, rum, or coins, following long-standing traditions.

The island is framed by three pristine white-sand beaches, rich bird colonies, lush tropical vegetation, and a vibrant coral reef that offers exceptional snorkeling and diving. The region benefits from consistent sunshine year-round, creating ideal conditions for relaxation and marine exploration.

Nearby, the famous Four Brothers islets are renowned for:

  • Exceptional diving

  • Nesting sites of numerous seabird species, including gannets, frigatebirds, and straw-tailed birds

Tsarabanjina’s harmony between nature, culture, and tranquility makes it one of Madagascar’s most exclusive island destinations.
