DAY 02: ANTANANARIVO - ANDASIBE (PERINET)

Antananarivo City Tour and Transfer to Andasibe

After breakfast, begin your day with a fascinating exploration of Antananarivo, affectionately called “Tana” by locals. We start with a scenic drive to the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This sacred hill is home to the Queen’s Palace, royal tombs, and ancient spiritual sites that once formed the heart of the Merina Kingdom—the dynasty that unified Madagascar into a modern state. Perched atop the highest hill in the capital, it offers spectacular panoramic views over the city and surrounding countryside.

We then continue toward Independence Avenue and Anosy Lake, where you’ll witness the vibrant blend of Madagascar’s diverse cultures and communities. From there, we take a picturesque eastward drive to Marozevo, known for the Peyrieras Reserve (also called the Madagascar Exotic Park). This unique wildlife center, founded by naturalist André Peyrieras, shelters nearly all of Madagascar’s chameleon species, as well as colorful butterflies, leaf-tailed geckos, lemurs, and many other fascinating creatures.

As we continue along National Road RN2, the scenery transforms into lush rainforest landscapes, with breathtaking views of terraced rice fields and dense tropical vegetation. We make several photo stops before reaching Andasibe, gateway to the Andasibe-Mantadia National Park—one of the most famous nature reserves in Madagascar, home to the iconic Indri Indri lemur.

After check-in at your lodge, enjoy a guided night walk at around 6:30 PM, lasting approximately one and a half hours. This nocturnal excursion offers the chance to observe Madagascar’s remarkable night-active species, including mouse lemurs, frogs, and chameleons.

DAY 3 : ANDASIBE (PERINET)

Antananarivo City Tour and Transfer to Andasibe

After breakfast, begin your day with a fascinating exploration of Antananarivo, Madagascar’s bustling capital affectionately known as “Tana.” Your journey starts with a scenic drive to the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the island’s most sacred locations. This ancient royal complex—featuring the Queen’s Palace, royal tombs, and spiritual sanctuaries—once stood as the heart of the Merina Kingdom, the dynasty that unified Madagascar into a modern nation. Perched atop Tana’s highest hill, Ambohimanga offers panoramic views over the capital and its surrounding countryside.

We then descend toward Independence Avenue and Anosy Lake, two landmarks that showcase the capital’s vibrant mix of Malagasy traditions and urban culture. Continue eastward toward Marozevo, home to the renowned Peyrieras Exotic Reserve (also known as the Madagascar Exotic Park). Founded by naturalist André Peyrieras, this remarkable sanctuary is home to nearly all of Madagascar’s chameleon species, along with colorful butterflies, leaf-tailed geckos, lemurs, and many other fascinating creatures.

Following your visit, the journey along National Road RN2 reveals ever-changing scenery—lush rainforests, terraced rice fields, and charming highland villages. Several scenic stops are planned for photography and short breaks before reaching Andasibe, gateway to the legendary Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. This reserve is one of Madagascar’s top wildlife destinations, famed for its population of Indri Indri lemurs, the largest of all lemur species.

After checking in at your lodge, enjoy a guided night walk around 6:30 PM (approximately 1.5 hours). This nocturnal adventure offers a glimpse of Madagascar’s hidden world, where mouse lemurs, tree frogs, and tiny chameleons emerge under the forest canopy.

DAY 05 : PALMARIUM

Exploration of the Palmarium Reserve

After breakfast, set out on a guided day walk through the enchanting Palmarium Reserve—also known as Ankanin’ny Nofy, meaning “The Nest of Dreams.” This private sanctuary, nestled on a small peninsula between Lake Ampitabe and the Indian Ocean, offers one of the most intimate wildlife encounters in Madagascar.

The reserve shelters ten different species of lemurs, freely roaming in their natural environment. You may observe Indri, Coquerel’s Sifaka, Crowned Lemur (Eulemur coronatus), Black-and-White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata), and the iconic Aye-Aye, one of Madagascar’s most mysterious nocturnal primates.

Palmarium is also home to a remarkable collection of endemic palm trees, including Dypsis, Ravenea, Orania, Voanioala, and the rare Lemurophoenix—species found nowhere else on Earth. Surrounded by pristine lakeside forest, this reserve perfectly combines biodiversity, tranquility, and scenic beauty, making it a highlight of any Madagascar journey.

DAY 06 : PALMARIUM – ANTANANARIVO

Boat Transfer to Tamatave via the Pangalanes Canal

Along the route, you’ll encounter a lively mix of local river traffic—from traditional dugout canoes and barges to colorful “bush-boats” (local river taxis) carrying passengers and goods between villages. The atmosphere is joyful and authentic, with friendly greetings between sailors and the cheerful waves of children along the riverbanks accompanying your passage.

This cruise offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of Madagascar’s eastern communities, where fishing, trading, and travel all happen on the water. It is both a scenic and cultural experience, filled with spontaneous moments and unforgettable encounters.

DAY 07 : ANTANANARIVO – MORONDAVA – KIRINDY

Flight to Morondava and Nocturnal Wildlife Walk in Kirindy

After breakfast, transfer to Ivato International Airport for your flight to the west coast of Madagascar.

Upon arrival, meet your local driver and continue by 4×4 vehicle northward toward the Menabe region, following a scenic but slightly winding 42-kilometer secondary road leading to the world-renowned Kirindy Forest Reserve.

After checking in at your lodge (Relais du Kirindy), take some time to rest before heading out at 6:30 PM for a guided night walk. This is one of Madagascar’s most thrilling wildlife experiences.

Kirindy Reserve is the best place on the island to observe the elusive fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox), Madagascar’s largest predator. Other nocturnal residents include the Coquerel’s giant mouse lemur, pygmy mouse lemur, fork-crowned lemur, western fat-tailed dwarf lemur, and red-tailed sportive lemur. In the afternoon, the journey continues north through scenic rice fields, savanna landscapes, and rural communities, offering a glimpse into daily life in the Menabe region. You’ll reach Bekopaka by late afternoon, where the adventure into the spectacular Tsingy formations will begin the following day.

Overnight at Soleil du Tsingy Lodge (or similar accommodation)

DAY 09 : BEKOPAKA

Full-Day Exploration of Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park

After breakfast, embark on a guided adventure through the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Madagascar’s greatest natural wonders. Today’s itinerary can be customized in consultation with your local guide and driver, allowing you to choose between several circuits depending on your fitness level and enthusiasm. Whether you prefer an easy walk or a more challenging climb, each trail promises breathtaking scenery and unforgettable discoveries.

The “Grand Tsingy” (Great Tsingy) is a spectacular labyrinth of sharp limestone pinnacles, sculpted by erosion over millions of years. Here, nature and geology meet in perfect harmony, forming dramatic spires, caves, and suspension bridges that offer thrilling panoramic views. The flora includes typical species of Madagascar’s dry deciduous forest such as aloe, baobab (Adansonia), and the vibrant flamboyant tree, as well as orchids, pachypodium, and Madagascar’s native banana (Musa perrieri) thriving among the rocks.

The fauna is equally remarkable. You may encounter the stump-tailed chameleon (Brookesia perarmata), over 53 bird species, and 7 lemur species, including the famous Decken’s sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi deckeni).

A picnic lunch will be served inside the park, surrounded by the stunning scenery of this prehistoric stone forest. In the afternoon, continue your discovery with a visit to the Small Tsingy, offering a different yet equally mesmerizing landscape of limestone towers, canyons, and caves teeming with wildlife.

Continue toward the world-famous Avenue of the Baobabs, one of Madagascar’s most iconic landmarks. Arrive just in time to witness a spectacular sunset—the golden light casting long shadows across the giant Grandidier’s baobabs, creating a truly magical scene that remains one of the most photographed landscapes in the country.

DAY 12 : ANTSIRABE – RANOMAFANA

These visits offer a glimpse into the region’s artisan heritage and everyday Malagasy life.

After the visit, continue driving southward through the scenic Betsileo highlands, a region famous for its terraced rice fields, rolling hills, and colorful rural villages. Stop in Ambositra for lunch and a short city tour to discover the area’s renowned Malagasy handicrafts—especially wood carving, marquetry, and weaving, which reflect the unique artistry of the Zafimaniry people.

In the afternoon, continue toward Ifanadiana, a peaceful town located near Ranomafana National Park, one of Madagascar’s top biodiversity hotspots. Arrive by early evening and check in at your hotel for dinner and relaxation.

DAY 13 : RANOMAFANA

Exploration of Ranomafana National Park

After breakfast, set off for a full-day exploration of the Ranomafana National Park, a lush rainforest reserve located in Madagascar’s southeastern highlands. This protected area forms part of the Eastern Forest Corridor, one of the island’s last remaining expanses of pristine rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Accompanied by your local park guide, venture into the heart of the humid forest, where you’ll discover the extraordinary endemic biodiversity that makes this region world-famous. The park shelters rare and critically endangered lemur species, such as the golden bamboo lemur and greater bamboo lemur, along with countless bird species, chameleons, and colorful frogs.

The forest is also rich in unique plant life, much of which is used by local communities for traditional medicine. As you follow forest trails lined with towering trees and tangled vines, you’ll encounter picturesque waterfalls and the tranquil sounds of nature all around you.

After the morning trek, return to your hotel for lunch and a well-earned rest. The remainder of the afternoon is free—relax at your hotel, enjoy the natural hot springs for which Ranomafana is known, or simply unwind after this immersive nature experience.

Stop in the town of Ambalavao for lunch and a short cultural visit to the Antemoro Paper Factory, where local artisans craft handmade paper from the bark of the Havoha tree using centuries-old techniques. This traditional process produces the famous Antemoro paper, often decorated with dried flowers and natural fibers—a beautiful souvenir and symbol of Malagasy artistry.

Along the route, enjoy several photo stops to capture the shifting scenery as you descend from the green highlands toward the dry savanna of the southwest. Arrive in Isalo by late afternoon and check in at your lodge, located at the foot of the park’s sandstone formations.

Overnight at Relais de la Reine (Half Board basis)

DAY 15 : ISALO

Trekking and Discovery of Isalo National Park

After breakfast, set out for a full day of trekking and exploration inside the extraordinary Isalo National Park. Formed during the Jurassic period, this vast sandstone massif—often described as a “ruin-like mountain range”—offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Madagascar.

Accompanied by your local guide, hike across winding trails that reveal deep canyons, sculpted rock formations, and lush oases hidden among arid cliffs. The trek includes a visit to the famous Canyon des Makis, home to playful ring-tailed lemurs, and the Natural Pool, a turquoise spring surrounded by palm trees, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim.

A picnic lunch will be served in the park, allowing you to relax amid this spectacular scenery. In the late afternoon, return to your lodge, stopping en route at the iconic Window of Isalo (La Fenêtre de l’Isalo) to admire a magnificent sunset—a moment when the sandstone cliffs glow in hues of gold, red, and orange, creating one of Madagascar’s most unforgettable views.

DAY 16 : ISALO – TULEAR – ANTANANARIVO

Drive to Tulear and Flight to Antananarivo

After breakfast, continue your journey south along the legendary RN7 highway, which stretches from the central highlands all the way to Tulear (Toliara) on Madagascar’s southwest coast. This scenic route showcases a remarkable transition of landscapes—from dry deciduous forests to the spiny desert ecosystem unique to this part of the island.

As you travel, pass through Ilakaka, the once-sleepy village transformed into a bustling sapphire mining town, often compared to the Wild West for its vibrant and unpredictable atmosphere. The road also offers glimpses of the region’s impressive Mahafaly tombs, ornately decorated resting places built to honor chiefs and kings. These tombs are covered with stones, carvings, zebu horns, and statues, symbolizing the power and status of the deceased. Some of the grandest tombs display more than 700 zebu horns—a testament to the importance of the individuals buried within.
Please note: as these are sacred sites, we will not stop for photos out of respect for local customs.

Further south, the scenery shifts to the Antandroy region, known for its arid landscapes dotted with baobab trees and spiny euphorbia forests. This area, often called the “Deep South”, represents one of the driest environments in Madagascar, where the resilient local communities depend on scarce water sources for survival. The massive baobabs, centuries old, stand like sentinels of the desert—their leafless branches resembling roots, giving rise to their nickname: “upside-down trees.”

Upon arrival in Tulear, transfer directly to the airport for your flight back to Antananarivo. Upon landing, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for the final night of your journey.

Madagascar Wildlife & National Parks Circuit

This unforgettable tour takes you across Madagascar’s most iconic destinations — Antananarivo, Andasibe, Morondava, Tsingy de Bemaraha, Antsirabe, Ranomafana, Isalo, Toliara, and Ifaty. From the misty rainforests to the desert canyons, every stop reveals a different side of the island’s extraordinary biodiversity and landscapes.

Andasibe National Park – Home of the Indri Lemur

Located about 140 km east of Antananarivo and only 1.5 km from the village of Andasibe, this protected area covers 16,310 hectares — divided between the Analamazaotra Special Reserve (810 ha) and Mantadia National Park (15,500 ha).

The climate here is humid with an average temperature of 18°C and 1,700 mm of annual rainfall spread over 210 days. Roughly 80% of the forest is primary, while 13% is secondary, showing minimal human impact.

Andasibe is world-famous for its Indri Indri, the largest living lemur species, known for its haunting morning calls echoing through the forest. You can also spot a variety of orchids, reptiles, and endemic birds.

The park provides three campsites and a comfortable hotel, making it ideal for nature lovers. Anyone passionate about wildlife, photography, or botany should not miss Andasibe during their Madagascar journey.

Kirindy National Park – Madagascar’s Dry Forest Jewel

About 70 km south of Morondava, in the Menabe region, lies Kirindy National Park, one of Madagascar’s most significant dry deciduous forests. It forms part of the Sakalava Kingdom territory and is now recognized as one of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, among 669 sites representing 120 countries.

Kirindy serves as a transition zone between western and southern ecosystems, hosting a dense dry forest (70% of its area), thorny thickets of Didiereaceae and Euphorbiaceae, and brackish coastal lakes.

The park shelters an incredible 97% endemic biodiversity, including lemurs, reptiles, birds, and rare mammals such as the fossa, Madagascar’s top predator. For visitors, Kirindy offers a chance to experience the raw and wild side of the island, especially during night walks when nocturnal species become active.

Isalo National Park – Canyon Landscapes and Desert Beauty

Situated in Ranohira, southern Madagascar, Isalo National Park spans over 81,540 hectares. The region is home to the Bara people, alongside diverse communities drawn by sapphire mining around Ilakaka.

Geologically, Isalo is fascinating — its rock formations date back 200 million years to the Jurassic period, shaped by erosion into deep canyons, sandstone peaks up to 200 meters, and natural pools.

The park hosts 82 bird species, 33 reptiles, 15 amphibians, and 14 mammals, including lemurs such as the ring-tailed maki, sifaka, and varika.

Hiking through Isalo feels like walking through a natural cathedral — the dramatic cliffs and sculpted rocks resemble movie sets from the Wild West. It is Madagascar’s most visited national park and a must-see for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.

Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park – Madagascar’s Stone Forest

Rising in the western region, about 200 km north of Morondava, lies the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. Covering over 150,000 hectares, the Tsingy formations are limestone pinnacles created millions of years ago from ancient coral sediments uplifted from the sea.

Over time, acidic rainwater sculpted the limestone into sharp spires, deep canyons, and tunnels, forming what is now known as the “Stone Forest.”

This park is an endemic hotspot, with 80–90% of its species found nowhere else. Scientists have recorded:

  • 17 rare reptile species, including the tiny Brookesia perarmata chameleon,

  • 11 lemur species,

  • 6 bird species, and

  • 2 local amphibians unique to the area.

The flora is equally diverse, with over 600 plant species, including baobabs, aloes, and flamboyant trees. The Tsingy de Bemaraha offers an adventure of a lifetime for hikers and explorers eager to witness Madagascar’s geological wonderland.

Ranomafana National Park – The Rainforest of Wonders

Located in southeastern Madagascar, Ranomafana National Park straddles the Upper Matsiatra and Vatovavy Fitovinany regions. It lies 412 km from Antananarivo, 65 km from Fianarantsoa, and 139 km from Mananjary.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site protects dense lowland and mid-altitude rainforests ranging from 600 to 1,400 meters in elevation. The park shelters a breathtaking diversity of life:

  • 12 lemur species, including the golden bamboo lemur,

  • 115 bird species (many endemic),

  • 98 amphibians,

  • 58 reptiles, and

  • hundreds of insects, spiders, and butterflies.

Ranomafana’s lush forest also contains rare hardwoods, bamboos, and over 90 species of orchids. Visitors will find beautiful hiking trails, cascading waterfalls, and the soothing thermal springs from which the park takes its name (“Ranomafana” means hot water in Malagasy).

The park is a haven for biologists and eco-travelers, offering the perfect combination of biodiversity, beauty, and adventure.

  • Climate of Madagascar

Madagascar enjoys a tropical climate, yet temperatures vary greatly by region. The central highlands, including Antananarivo and Andasibe, are much cooler — sometimes dropping to 5°C at night during July and August.

The dry season typically runs from March to October, sometimes extending into November in most areas.

    • The east coast is best visited between March–May and September–November.

    • Cyclone season occurs from January to March.

    • The southwest region is hot, dry, and semi-arid.

For nature lovers, March–April is the perfect time to admire blooming flowers and reptiles, while November (spring)is the best season for wildlife and birdwatching. Lemurs, however, can be observed throughout the year.

Weather patterns in Madagascar can sometimes be unpredictable, so travelers should prepare for occasional changes in climate.

    Recommended Equipment and Clothing

HT Agency Tours provides essential items such as torches for nocturnal walks and a water bottle. However, we advise guests to bring:

    • Camera film and spare batteries

    • Binoculars

    • Beach towel and swimwear

    • Rainproof pants for rainforest walks

    • Walking poles, especially for Ranomafana and Andasibe National Parks

    • Lightweight walking boots or trainers

Clothing should be light and breathable, but also include a warm sweater or jacket. Even during summer, nights in higher altitudes or desert areas can be cold — particularly from July to September.

Always carry rainwear, as tropical showers can occur anytime. For winter months, pack a few extra warm layers.

    Visa and Passport Requirements

For U.S. citizens, a Madagascar entry visa is required and can be obtained on arrival.

    • Cost: Approximately USD 40

    • Validity: 30 days

    • Payment: In USD or Euro, preferably in small denominations

    • Exchange rate: Adjusted daily at the airport

For a single-entry tourist visa, travelers can also apply online via the official E-Visa portal.

Once approved, print the e-visa approval letter and present it with your passport at immigration upon arrival. The approval letter takes at least 3 days to process, so apply well in advance — ideally within 6 months before your trip.

The maximum stay allowed is 90 days. Always consult your country’s Madagascar consulate or the e-visa FAQ for the latest requirements before departure.

    Travel Insurance Policy

It is a mandatory condition when booking with HT Agency Tours that travelers have valid and comprehensive travel insurance.

    Your policy should cover:

    • Medical expenses

    • Emergency repatriation

    • Helicopter evacuation for medical emergencies

    • Trip cancellation and delay protection

If your tour includes trekking, make sure the policy covers high-altitude activities with no upper altitude limit. Carefully read your insurer’s terms and conditions to ensure you’re protected for every planned and optional activity during your Madagascar journey.

    Vaccinations and Health Precautions

While no vaccinations are compulsory, the following are strongly recommended:

    • Malaria prophylaxis

    • Tetanus

    • Typhoid

    • Hepatitis A

    • Polio

    • Diphtheria

Travelers aged over 9 months who have visited or transited through yellow fever risk countries must present a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate upon arrival.

Consult your travel clinic for the most current medical advice. The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office also recommends wearing long-sleeved shirts and using mosquito repellent regularly, even during the day, as mosquitoes remain active.

Always confirm the latest health and vaccination requirements with your doctor before departure.

    Food and Drink in Madagascar

Meal prices in Madagascar can vary depending on location and restaurant style. Here’s a general guide to average costs:

    Item Average Price (USD)
    Lunch 10
    Dinner 17
